A recent article in the Southeast Missourian features an interview with MHA staff about how federal health care reforms will affect the health care workforce. Under the Affordable Care Act, as many as 300,000 Missourians could become eligible for health coverage through Medicaid. Nearly 900,000 are currently enrolled in the program, and “newly insured patients will require a corresponding increase in primary care physicians, nurses, pharmacy and laboratory staff.” In addition, more people will become eligible for Medicare and also will require more health providers to treat the medical needs of the baby boomers. These growing demands make health care an excellent choice for individuals looking for career opportunities.
