Emergency Medicine

You respond to medical emergencies and give emergency care to people who are ill or injured. You are usually the first on the scene of an accident, and you stabilize and monitor people who have been hurt. Many times you’ll travel with the patient in an ambulance and report on the patient’s condition when you reach the hospital.

Job Description

You drive ambulances or assist ambulance drivers in transporting injured or sick people. You keep the vehicle sanitary and replace supplies inside the vehicle. You may administer first aid, such as bandaging, splinting, or giving oxygen.

Academic Requirements

Usually, a high school diploma (or its equivalent) is required, but further academic courses are not needed. A driver often can begin a new job with moderate on-the-job training.
