Emergency Medicine
You respond to medical emergencies and give emergency care to people who are ill or injured. You are usually the first on the scene of an accident, and you stabilize and monitor people who have been hurt. Many times you’ll travel with the patient in an ambulance and report on the patient’s condition when you reach the hospital.
Job Description
You drive ambulances or assist ambulance drivers in transporting injured or sick people. You keep the vehicle sanitary and replace supplies inside the vehicle. You may administer first aid, such as bandaging, splinting, or giving oxygen.
Academic Requirements
Usually, a high school diploma (or its equivalent) is required, but further academic courses are not needed. A driver often can begin a new job with moderate on-the-job training.

Job Description
You provide basic life support skills, such as first aid, and can give shots and prescription medication. You’ll use stretchers, backboards, oxygen devices and splints to help your injured or sick patients. You also may perform emergency procedures, such as stomach suction or heart monitoring, during the ambulance ride. You ensure the patient is immobilized and report on the patient’s status at the hospital.
Academic Requirements
Training for an EMT basic includes 120 hours of classroom instruction on emergency medical care and 60 hours of clinical field time completed in a hospital emergency room, ambulance and a medical priority dispatch center.
