Physiatrists or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physicians
Physiatrists are medical doctors (M.D.) or doctors of osteopathy (D.O.), certified as a specialist in physical and rehabilitation medicine. Physiatrists are certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
After completing medical school, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians complete residency programs devoted to learning the intricacies of physical medicine and rehabilitation. To achieve board certification in physical medicine and rehabilitation, physicians must pass both a written exam and an oral exam. The American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPM&R) administer both of these exams.
