Your Future in Health Care: Why Missouri Needs You Now More Than Ever

The Missouri Hospital Association released its annual workforce report. Here's what it means for health care job seekers.

If you’re exploring a career in health care, there’s never been a better time to step in and make a difference. The Missouri Hospital Association’s 2025 Workforce Report shows both encouraging progress and critical opportunities for students and job seekers.

Health Care Careers in High Demand

Across Missouri, hospitals are steadily recovering from the workforce challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Vacancy rates for health care positions have dropped below 10% for the first time since 2020, and turnover has stabilized. But the need for dedicated professionals remains urgent — especially in nursing, imaging, and front-line support roles like nurse assistants and phlebotomists.

Missouri’s hospitals are working hard to fill positions, but the reality is that too many workers are still leaving the field. In 2024, turnover among registered nurses stood at 16.1%, and for roles like nurse assistants and food service workers, turnover was above 40% in many cases. That means hospitals aren’t just looking for new hires — they need team members who are committed to growing a career in health care.

Top Roles With Opportunity

According to the report, here are some of the hospital-based roles with the highest vacancy — a signal of strong job availability:

Many of these roles can be accessed with a two-year degree or certification, making them ideal starting points if you’re ready to enter the workforce quickly.

What This Means for You

Whether you’re still in high school, exploring college majors or thinking about a career change, there are flexible paths into Missouri’s health care workforce. Hospitals and health systems are partnering with schools, offering apprenticeships, and supporting clinical training programs to help Missourians gain experience and build a career. And once you’re in? Hospitals are investing in mentorship, leadership development, and staff wellness to keep you supported and growing.

Make a Living. Make a Difference.

Health care is more than a job — it’s a calling. It offers the chance to make a real difference in your community every day, in ways both big and small. As the report notes, ongoing investment in the workforce is essential — and that means hospitals are actively looking for passionate people who want to be part of the solution.

If you’ve ever considered working in health care, now’s the time to take the next step. Whether you’re interested in patient care, lab work, technology, therapy or support services, Missouri hospitals are ready to help you build a purpose-driven future.
