June 2025 | Mini Medical School
Missouri high school students interested in careers in medicine can preview what medical school is like during Mini-Medical School. Students will stay in residence halls and eat in dining rooms on campus. Participation will be open to current Missouri high school juniors (rising seniors) graduating in 2026. The program is open to all students meeting eligibility criteria; we encourage student from groups underrepresented in medicine and from rural communities to apply.

The Hidden Careers in Health Care Teacher Externship is aimed at K-12 teachers to explore diverse health care careers and staffing needs. Teachers are encouraged to share insights with students to inspire potential health care career paths.
June 16 to July 24, 2025 | Star 2.0 Program
The STAR 2.0 Program provides a hands-on, high-quality research experience during the summer academic break for high school students and educators. During the program, participants get the chance to:
- Work with a Children’s Mercy faculty on an original research project.
- Develop a research publication for submission in a peer-reviewed journal.
- Learn about clinical and translational research methodology, writing, statistics, medical ethics and career development.
- Network and learn with other students/educators.
Summer 2025 | Adventures in HealthCare Camp
BJC HealthCare, through DEI BJC School Outreach and Youth Development, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Christian Hospital, Parkland Health Center, Missouri Baptist Sullivan, Barnes-Jewish St. Peters/Progress West, Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Memorial Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital are pleased to invite incoming 7th- or 8th-grade children of BJC HealthCare and Washington University School of Medicine employees to apply for a fun and educational week-long camp to be held the week of mid-July. If accepted, your child will explore careers such as nursing, radiology, pharmacy, respiratory care, central sterile processing, health information technology and many more through hands-on, interactive activities, tours, and presentations. DESE Certified Teacher Externship
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) certified teacher externship provides educators with opportunities to engage in real-world experiences within local industries. Through this program, teachers gain firsthand knowledge of current industry practices and trends, enabling them to enhance their curriculum with relevant, practical insights. By bridging the gap between the classroom and the workplace, the externship empowers teachers to better prepare students for future career success.
BJC HealthCare
Experts at BJC hospitals and affiliated colleges collaborate to provide career exploration opportunities for youth in the St. Louis region. Professionals at these facilities “plant the seeds” for high school students to explore career options, thus ensuring the development of a future workforce. Career program options include:

University Health Mobile Unit
The University Health mobile unit offers an enriching healthcare educational experience that can visit your school, providing an immersive experience for both teachers and students. This fully equipped unit features essential medical tools such as blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, suture practice kits, IV practice kits, CPR dummies, human and brain models, heart models, and more.
Our dedicated University Health staff will visit your school to not only demonstrate the use of these tools but also to engage students from kindergarten to 12th grade in hands-on learning experiences. These sessions are designed to inspire and educate students about various career opportunities in healthcare, fostering a deeper understanding of the field through interactive participation.

Job Shadowing at Bothwell Regional Health Center
Anyone interested in job shadowing at Bothwell Regional Health Center or any of its affiliate locations should review the Job Shadowing Packet and complete the application included.
Upon completion, all documents should be submitted at least one week prior to setting up your job shadow. No one will be allowed to job shadow without completing all of the requirements. A representative from Human Resources will contact you to arrange your job shadow.

Mercy Springfield Student Experiences
Shadowing at Mercy Hospital Springfield
Mercy Springfield Communities offers a variety of student/observation experiences.
A shadow/observation experience is for observation only without any hands-on interaction. It is limited to 40 hours or less (within one year) and you are not required to be enrolled in a school program.
Individual Learning Experience
An individual learning experience is a hands-on experience (either clinical or non-clinical). This experience requires you to be enrolled in a school program unless you are seeking an unpaid internship or are a professional approved to do research at Mercy.
Medical Explorers
Mercy – Springfield Medical Explorer Post #339 is a youth healthcare career exploration program jointly sponsored by Mercy Hospital Springfield and the Scouts of America. The purpose of Medical Explorers is to provide worksite-based experiences for students ages 14 through 20. Education through observation enables youth to make informed career decisions. Cohorts for this program will take place during the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.

MU Health Care Job Shadow Program
MU Health Care offers a job shadow program for individuals interested in learning about the various career opportunities we offer.
Job shadowing is a hands-off experience that allows you to follow and closely observe our employees performing their day-to-day duties.
North Kansas City Hospital School-to-Career
On-Site Academy
Juniors and seniors in North Kansas City Schools can enroll in On-Site Academy. Interested students should discuss the program with their school counselor.
Student Volunteer
The Student Volunteer program gives students 16 and older the opportunity to serve their community while gaining knowledge and experience in a healthcare environment. Volunteer positions are available in business, child care and clinical departments.
The program is divided into three sessions. The summer session runs from May-August and includes morning and afternoon shifts. The school-year sessions run September-December and February-May, with afternoon shifts available. Contact Bret Oleszczak, 816.691.1684.
Job Shadow
Job Shadow is a one-day opportunity (some nursing shadows might allow for mulitple days) for students ages 16 and up who have a general interest in a career in healthcare. Students tour their host department, observe employees in their work environment, discuss customer service and participate in teamwork activities.

Job Shadow Program at Ozarks Healthcare
A Job Shadow experience is defined as to follow and observe a medical professional as they carry out their roles and responsibilities at Ozarks Healthcare. Ozarks Healthcare (OZH) desires to assist high school, college students or an adult with an interest in health care to discover whether they want to pursue a future career in the health care profession.
VolunTEEN Program at Phelps Health
The Phelps Health Auxiliary and Volunteer Services Department hosts the VolunTEEN program each summer for area teenagers ages 14 to 18. Teens from several area school districts including Bland, Cuba, Dixon, Newburg, Rolla, Salem, St. James, Vienna and Waynesville participate in the program and learn more about helping other people, health care careers and workforce development.
Student and Shadow Experiences at Saint Francis
Shadowing allows an individual to follow and observe a real healthcare environment through observing colleagues and medical staff in carrying out their job responsibilities and duties in an occupational role. Shadowing is a voluntary opportunity for which there is no monetary compensation.
The student learning experience is a hands-on experience with SFHS patients, coworkers, equipment and/or data. This experience requires you to be enrolled in an educational program.
