After many years of planning with area superintendents, dating as far back as 1965, Herndon Career Center was opened in 1973. The original 317 students, who came from Hickman Mills School District, Center School District, Grandview School District, Independence School District, Kansas City Public Schools, and Lee’s Summit School District, in addition to host Raytown, were enrolled in Auto Body and Fender Repair, Data Processing, Graphic Arts, Business Education, Heating and Refrigeration, Radio and TV Repair, Health Services, Food Services, Horticulture, and Technical Drafting. A second building was obtained in 1974 to expand the program. Now condensed to one campus with three buildings, Herndon, named after long-time Superintendent Joe Herndon, continues to offer vocational programming for both students and adult learners.
