Blood bank technicians collect, label and prepare blood, plasma and other components for transfusions. Blood bank technicians properly store blood draws and maintain documentation and records. Technicians work with patients, making them comfortable during the procedure and monitoring vital signs.

Prior to training as a blood bank specialist, one must possess a bachelor’s degree and be certified in medical technology or have a bachelor’s degree in a science like biology and have worked in a blood bank. Training for this specialty varies by program and may take anywhere from 12-24 months. Students typically take courses in blood collection and storage, genetics, immunology, blood bank administration and other courses related to transfusion therapy. A Blood Bank specialty from American Society for Clinical Pathology may be needed.
