Cytogenetic technologists analyze the structure of chromosomes found in various biological specimens and their relationship to a variety of diseases.

A bachelor’s degree in cytotechnology, medical technology, biology, chemistry or a related field is generally required for this career. The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) offers a voluntary certification examination for becoming a Technologist in Cytogenetics (CG). Individuals who have attended an accredited cytogenetics technology program or who have a bachelor’s degree, previous coursework in clinical laboratory life science and a certain number of work experience hours in a cytogenetics laboratory may take this exam.
