Career Description

Health care social workers provide individuals, families and groups with the support they need to cope with serious illnesses. They advise and support family care givers, provide patient education and counseling, and make referrals when needed. They may also provide care and manage treatment plans designed to promote health, prevent disease and address barriers to access to health care.

Academic Requirements

Medical social workers typically earn a Master of Social Work degree from an accredited institution. A Bachelor of Social Work degree program can allow access to entry level positions, but the standard has become the master’s degree with additional certification and ongoing education expected.
