Academic Requirements

Becoming a psychiatrist requires many years of education and clinical training and licensing, including four years of medical school followed by at least four years in a psychiatric residency program. However, all this training begins with a bachelor’s degree. Individuals interested in careers in psychiatry can choose from a number of possible undergraduate majors, such as biology, chemistry or psychology.
